Born into a clerical family〔His father Edgar Charles Sumner Gibson was Bishop of Gloucester from 1905 until 1924〕 he was educated at Marlborough and Keble College, Oxford.〔"Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 Ordained deacon in 1909 and priest a year later his first post was as curate at ''All Saints, Wokingham''.〔(Church Web-Site )〕
